Is Himalayan Salt being Depleted?

November 4th, 2008

the largest mountain range in the world
Himalayan Mountains

the largest mountain range in the world

The Himalayan Mountains is one of the largest mountain ranges in the world and it is also one of the most newly formed. Of the salt mined from the Himalayan mountains, 98% is consumed by government endeavors, including salting the roads and aiding in the procurement of petroleum fuel. The remaining 2% is used for the procurement of salt lamps, Himalayan bath salt, Himalayan edible salt and other practical salt uses.

Unlike Persian salt or Polish salt, Himalayan salt is not in short supply. In fact, there is quite an abundance of this resource. Although the price of Himalayan salt is on the rise, it is comparably less relative to the depletion of salt taking place in the US mines, below the cities of Detroit and Cleveland. Many of the major companies in the US who salt the roads in the Eastern US during the winter are looking to the Himalayan Mountains as a vital resource for combating the hazardous winter weather. Because Himalayan salt is quite abundant, companies such as Morton and Cargil have been able to supply many of the state municipalities without breaking their allocated budgets.

Using Your Salt Lamp for Aromatherapy

The metal cup serves for the use of essential oils

It was not log ago that a customer recommended using oil on a salt lamp to diffuse the air with ions and natural scents.  We thought about it and decided to make an aroma salt lamp.  Our goal was to keep the natural Himalayan salt lamp appeal and add the functionality of a diffuser to gently heat essential oils.

We upgraded the bulb system to have a much hotter bulb than normally used in a salt lamp and created a diffuser cup at the top to hold the oil. We found that our aroma salt lamp was one of the most effective systems we had ever seen.

Since we released the lamp we have seen it go to massage and health clinics, peoples homes and businesses.  The feedback we have received on this lamp is just amazing.

How to use: Himalayan Aroma Salt Lamp:

  1. Simply turn on the lamp and fill the reservoir with your favorite essential oil or blend.
  2. Wait about 10 minutes for the salt to heat up and warm the oil.
  3. After about 15 minutes the smell from the oil will fill the air.

Color Therapy & Salt Lamps

October 20th, 2008

Color Therapy is an interesting concept. Color Therapy basically is defined as a person trained in color therapy, also known as chromotherapy uses light and sound to perfect imbalances in a persons emotional, mental, physical and spiritual state.  Because colors are associated with either positive or negative states, each color plays a prominent role in the healing process.

The University of Bloomsburg has compiled a list of colors and their effects:

  • Blue - peace, tranquility, calm, stability, harmony, unity, trust, truth, confidence, conservatism, security, cleanliness, order, loyalty, sky, water, cold, technology, and depression.
  • Green - nature, environment, health, good luck, renewal, youth, vigor, spring, generosity, fertility, jealousy, inexperience, envy, misfortune.
  • Purple - royalty, spirituality, nobility, ceremony, mystery, transformation, wisdom, enlightenment, cruelty, arrogance, mourning.
  • White - reverence, purity, simplicity, cleanliness, peace, humility, precision, innocence, youth, birth, winter, snow, good, sterility, and marriage.
  • Black - power, sexuality, sophistication, formality, elegance, wealth, mystery, fear, evil, anonymity, unhappiness, depth, style, evil, sadness, remorse, anger, underground, good technical color, mourning and death.
  • Orange - balance, warmth, enthusiasm, vibrance, flamboyancy, and is demanding of attention.
  • Yellow - joy, happiness, optimism, idealism, imagination, hope, sunshine, summer, gold, philosophy, dishonesty, cowardice, betrayal, jealousy, covetousness, deceit, illness, hazard, spirtuality and inspiration.

Himalayan Salt Lamps Contributing to Color Therapy:

The most sacred color in Chinese culture is red, symbolizing luck, celebration and energy. In India, red is linked to purity. In the world of Salt Lamps, red just happens to be the most popular color. Many people gravitate towards the deep, rich and vibrant color when selecting their preferred salt lamp. Is is just aesthetics or is it more of a testament to effect the color has on the human pyschie?

Salt Lamps are natural ionizers, so they are presumed to be natural air purifiers. When the air is purged of airborne pollutants, the air is cleaner, making it easier for the body to breathe. When the body is taking in cleaner, more negative ion enriched air, the energy levels of the body automatically increase because there is less strain on the respiratory system. If this is the case, couldn’t be argued the combination of the negative ions and the color red would make an ideal color therapy vehicle for improving bodily and mental imbalance?

Himalayan Silver Salt Lamps also Emit Negative Ions

The silvery color of the salt lamp is due to ash and silt mixing in the air

Recently, an email inquiry arrived in our inbox asking of the Himalayan Silver Salt Lamp “Do they give off the same amount of negative ions that the others do - is that some kind of coating that makes them silver?”

The answer plain and simple is yes. The only difference between the silvery gray salt lamps and the more vibrant yellow/red/orange colored salt lamps is aesthetics. The same negative ion principles are at play regardless of color as long as it is in fact authentic Himalayan Salt.

The silvery gray color comes from the respective area the salt is mined from. The gray signifies that while the Himalayan mountain was cooling (”known as one of the youngest mountain ranges in the world” according to Wikipedia/Himalaya), the silt and ash circulating in the air mixed in with extreme fiery temperature of the rock salt, giving it an dark opaque tint.  The more traditional colors of salt lamps, i.e red/orange/yellow is found deeper within the mountain at depths where air particles could not reach the rock salt as the lava was cooling.

A Guide to Starting a Salt Lamp Business

October 5th, 2008

Thinking of starting a salt lamp business?

We often receive phone calls with an opening disclaimer of “I have never purchased salt lamps in bulk but I am thinking of getting into a small salt lamp wholesale operation. What do I need to know?”

1. Best Selling Salt Lamps

In any undetermined market, it is best to stick with the salt lamps that will sell in any market. In order of top sellers, they are:
Natural Himalayan Salt Lamp - Md. (3-5 lbs)
Natural Himalayan Salt Lamp - Lg. (6-8 lbs)
Fire Bowl Himalayan Salt Lamp (5-6.5 lbs)
Natural Himalayan Salt Tealight - Sm. (1-3 lbs)

The best selling salt lamps will be the staple product from which to build your product line. Depending on your market and customer feedback, you may end up bringing in other lamps like a Natural Salt Lamp - XL, Sphere Salt Lamp or the Cube Tealight. Purchasing these 2nd tier sellers should be based on feedback and data. Just remember, the Natural Salt - Md. will always sell.

2. The Right Salt Lamp Mix

Between the Naturals, Geometrics and Tealights, there are numerous products to choose from. A good rule of thumb for percentage breakdowns of what to order is:
Naturals - 65%
Geometrics - 20%
Tealights - 15%

Obviously, this may change from region to region as some markets might gravitate more towards the inexpensive Himalayan Tealights while others like the size of the Natural Salt Lamp - 3XL (20-30 lbs). But more or less, there shouldn’t be more of an error rate of +/- 10%.

3. Salt Lamp Marketing Materials

The Salt of the Earth includes a front and back insert with every order which explains the properties of the Himalayan Salt Lamp, including caring/cleaning, replacing the bulb, the history, the effects of negative ions and where to use. There is no company information on the sheet so your customers will not be able to contact us. The purpose of the insert is to inform and educate both the salt lamp business owner and its future customers.
Additionally, we also have full color brochures, individual Point of Purchase Displays and other market materials. Ask your the Salt of the Earth team member for additional selling materials.

4. Displaying the Salt Lamps

Once the shipment of salt lamps arrives, you begin configuring your shelves to best market the Himalayan lamps. In order to capture the attention of the passerby and utilize valuable shelf space, it is best to:
Show & Tell - remove the salt lamp from the box and place the item in front - it is the aesthetics of the lamp which sells the product not the box
Turn It On - plug the cord into the wall and let the bulb inside the cavity of the lamp make the salt lamp shine bright. The patrons want to see the full effect and know exactly what they’re getting before purchasing
Provide Variety - it is important to show the depth and breadth of your product line. Fill the shelf with Naturals, Geometrics and Tealights. It is best to let the customer decide whether they want a darker, more vibrant lamp or one with deep silver striations
Knowledge = Power - first time salt lamp owners are always intrigued by the beauty of the lamps however without knowing the benefits of salt lamps, they may feel intimated. Explain to the customer what they are and the value of negative ions in salt lamps. Additionally, hand them the salt lamp insert which comes with the product. This will serve to explain the basics of salt lamps, including properties, health benefits, how to clean your lamp and how to change the bulb.

Negative Ions - What are they Exactly?

September 26th, 2008

What do Lightning, Waterfalls and Rainfall have in common?  They all evoke a feeling of euphoria, invigoration and heightened senses. This is because these natural forces in nature have generated several trillion generous negative ions, which purge the air of impurities and pollutants, leaving the body feeling wonderful.

The Scientific Answer:

A closer look at the atomic structure of a H20 particle
H2O Particle

A closer look at the atomic structure of a H20 particle

By definition, an ion is “an atom or molecule which has lost or gained one or more electrons, giving it a positive or negative electrical charge” (wikipedia/Negative Ions). Ions are atoms, which have gained or lost their electrical charge. Once a negative or positive charge is acquired, they seek out their counterpart through magnetic attraction and once formed, they neutralize one another. They are created in nature as a result of broken apart sunlight, radiation and moving air and water (Web MD/Negative Ions).

What are Positive Ions?

Here are some examples:

  • Pet dander
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Computer radiation
  • Fridge
  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Gas fumes
  • Air conditioner

Salt Lamps & Negative Ions:

Step 1-Rock The Surface:

The surface of salt lamps is hygroscopic, meaning they pull in water molecules from the air (more specifically H2O). The water molecules broken down to the molecular level are two parts negatively charged Hydrogen and one part positively charged Oxygen. One of the negatively charged ions (anions) seek out the one lone positively charged (cations) and neutralize one another. The result is one lone negatively charged ion.

Step 2-Release the Hounds:

The one lone negative ion is released from the surface of the rock salt lamp into the air. As the salt attracts more and more water molecules, it is quickly able to offer its surrounding environment more and more anions. The anions quickly build up, creating a very pure and breathe easy environment.

Step 3-The Himalayan Salt Lamp Experience:

In a moisture rich environment, particularly in areas located along the coastline and near large bodies of water, the supreme effects of salt lamps are made apparent. The Himalayan salt works overtime churning out large amounts of negative ions. If the salt lamp begins to sweat, this is a good thing. Sweating amounts to a negatively enriched environment, meaning someone in a dry climate wishes their salt lamp or set of salt lamps wishes their lamp is working is hard as yours.  But even in desert like areas, salt lamps still provide a major benefit, even if on to a lesser degree.

Where Should I Put My Salt Lamp?

September 24th, 2008

Often the question arises, I have my salt lamp but what do I do with it?  We provide information on the four most common places to locate a salt lamp. This is an expanded version of the FAQ Salt Lamp.

Salt lamps make great additions to the work environment

Salt lamps remove electrical born positive ions

Office Salt Lamps:

A salt lamp makes a valuable addition to any large or small office. Between the computer, phone, fax machine, copier and all the other gadgets in the office, we are surrounded by machines which produce an abundance of positive ions. Fortunately, salt lamps negatively ionize the air, thus neutralizing the positive ions and providing a cleaner, fresher breathing environment.

Bedroom Salt Lamps:

Many people suffer from allergies, asthma and other nasal congestion making it difficult to breathe. Especially at night. Besides the work place, we spend on average 1/3 of our time resting in our beds. Resting comfortably and sleeping soundly is becoming increasingly difficult due to hectic schedules and environmental complications. A great way to combat allergens and other air born pollutants, is to situate a Himalayan salt lamp on a bed stand close to where you sleep.

Kitchen Salt Lamps:

Salt lamps neaturalize air born pollutants

Salt lamps naturalize air born pollutants

Another location filled with appliances and other electrical devices is the kitchen. A kitchen is where the food is prepared, cooked and often consumed which underlies the importance of keeping it clean and free of harmful pollutants. However, making sure the fridge is free of expired perishable goods and all dishes clean of debris sometimes gets overlooked. Salt Lamps release negative ions which attack the unsatisfactory aromas left by once savory food items. So if a pure and natural air freshener is not available, reach for a Himalayan salt lamp.

Living Room Salt Lamps:

Salt lamps comfort and brighten the living room

The living room is a meeting place, the common space where people come to congregate and share. It is also notoriously filled with TV’s, radios, DVD players, Video Game consoles. And normally each electrical appliance comes equipped with four black cords. Four cords multiplied by four items, equals 16 cords pumping massive amounts of unnatural particles into the air. This can cause quite an imbalance in the air, especially when not being countered by a proper air purifying device. A salt lamp with a single black UL Cord and low wattage bulb will pump negative ion refreshments back into the air, creating an comfortable and breath easy environment.
